Hi guys! Here’s a transcript from Thursday night’s #DanceChat. The topic was Dancing in Public – Where it happens, the social stigmas that surround it and how to feel more comfortable doing it. We talked about dancing in the club, Latin dancing and flash mobs, among other topics, and watched some cool flash mobs on YouTube.

Ironically, I witnessed my very first flash mob yesterday while I was at work, and it was INCREDIBLE. The flash mob was held as a part of a “Go Red for Women” event, which was sponsored by the American Heart Association. A group of dancers of varying ages, races and genders strutted their stuff through department stores, down mall walkways and into the mall’s main square in an effort to raise awareness about heart disease in women. To learn more about “Go Red for Women,” check out its website.

And without further ado, here is the transcript from Thursday’s #DanceChat!

#DanceChat has officially begun! Tonight we’re discussing dancing in public places – where it happens, the social stigmas that surround it and how to feel comfortable doing it

At what kinds of events is dancing required? What are some typical public settings where you encounter dance? #DanceChat

I immediately think about weddings, because I have a lot of friends getting married this year. #DanceChat

Melanie A. Stinson aplace4us Melanie A. Stinson

AScho3 Singles’ Dances, weddings for sure. #DanceChat

Alyssa Schoeneman AScho3 Alyssa Schoeneman

Clubs, bars & house parties are common dance-friendly environments. Sometimes religious or cultural ceremonies involve dance. #DanceChat

Alyssa Schoeneman AScho3 Alyssa Schoeneman

A lot of people get nervous or anxious dancing in front of others. Are you one of those people? Why or why not? #DanceChat

I generally don’t get nervous if I’m dancing at a club, but I’m much more self aware when my family is around#DanceChat

Melanie A. Stinson aplace4us Melanie A. Stinson

I think nervousness in dancing in public can happen if we become self-conscious, feel we’re not good dancers or are having problems following music or our partner #DanceChat

Alyssa Schoeneman AScho3 Alyssa Schoeneman

@seedangess What about you? Do you ever get nervous or anxious if you’re dancing at a club or a concert? Why or why not? #DanceChat

Carly Doenges seedangess Carly Doenges

AScho3 at concerts no, cuz I just jump around. but at clubs, yes, because of the aforementioned reason haha. I can’t dance normally!

Alyssa Schoeneman AScho3 Alyssa Schoeneman

@seedangess What does “dancing normally” mean to you? Do you think people are judging your dance moves when you dance at a club? #DanceChat

Carly Doenges seedangess Carly Doenges

AScho3 well maybe “normal” isn’t the right word…you just don’t see a lot of moshing at clubs and that’s what I’m used to.

Alyssa Schoeneman AScho3 Alyssa Schoeneman

@seedangess Gotcha. So you’re not going to start the club-moshing trend? I guess that might be hazardous #DanceChat

Carly Doenges  seedangess Carly Doenges

@AScho3 hazardous, but kinda awesome. and I’d be sure to get ALL the guys! Lol

Alyssa Schoeneman AScho3 Alyssa Schoeneman

@seedangess You could change the worlds of dancing and dating as we know them. haha. #Dancechat

Alyssa Schoeneman AScho3 Alyssa Schoeneman

@seedangess I think it is worth noting that “moshers” have an admirable sense of self-confidence when they are dancing #DanceChat

Alyssa Schoeneman AScho3 Alyssa Schoeneman

For some people, feeling confident dancing in public means that they are busting their “go-to” moves. #DanceChat

Do you have any signature moves? What are they? Did you make them up or are they trendy dance moves? #DanceChat

Alyssa Schoeneman AScho3 Alyssa Schoeneman

Having confidence on the dance floor is one of the best ways to be perceived as a “good dancer.” Smiling helps too #DanceChat

Other good dance floor tricks: 1. Move your feet 2. Bend your knees 3. Move your limbs. Don’t stay in one place! #DanceChat

I love when people engage with me on the dance floor in a playful, not predatory, way. Does anyone have a good dance floor story? #DanceChat

Or some advice about how else to be confident on the dance floor at any event? #DanceChat

Alyssa Schoeneman AScho3 Alyssa Schoeneman

Some people take dance lessons before attending dance-friendly social events. This is often true of weddings #DanceChat

But it is also true in the recreational Latin dance community. For males, especially, it is important to learn to lead before jumping on the dance floor at a club on Salsa night. Otherwise, the results could be disastrous. #DanceChat

By disastrous, I mean sloppy dancing -in the chemistry between the members of the dancing couple & in general spatial unawareness #DanceChat

Have any of you ever taken salsa dance lessons? @brisito, I know you’ve taught your fair share. How important are they? #DanceChat

@AScho3 Dancing is like cooking. #dancechat

@AScho3 Some people can make delicious food without training but it might look, taste, and become more consistent with training. #DanceChat

Alyssa Schoeneman AScho3 Alyssa Schoeneman

Latin dance is culturally embedded; there are two ways people learn – in a technique class or from their families and friends #DanceChat

Alyssa Schoeneman AScho3 Alyssa Schoeneman

I love watching people freestyle b/c it gives me a better idea of who they are fundamentally. We’re all our best at our silliest. #DanceChat

“Freestyle” means diff. things to different people. When I say freestyling, I mean moving how your body naturally wants to move. #DanceChat

Having confidence dancing in public is all about letting go of judgement. Chances are, people will judge you more for sitting out #DanceChat

Alyssa Schoeneman AScho3 Alyssa Schoeneman

Flashmobs have become a huge trend in recent years. Why do you think that is? #DanceChat

Alyssa Schoeneman AScho3 Alyssa Schoeneman

Groups like Improv Everywhere are bringing music and dance to everyday places #DanceChat

Alyssa Schoeneman AScho3 Alyssa Schoeneman

Have any of you ever organized or participated in a Flash Mob? What was the crowd reaction? #DanceChat

Alyssa Schoeneman AScho3 Alyssa Schoeneman

Check out this Traffic Light Dance Off – a 3-person flash mob” that was obviously effective. #DanceChat

Alyssa Schoeneman AScho3 Alyssa Schoeneman

Flash mobs have become trendy as a way to raise awareness for other events or causes. Concerts & Art Festivals often use them as a form of free marketing. What better way to get people excited about something than to give them a taste of the action? #DanceChat

Melanie A. Stinson aplace4us Melanie A. Stinson

Luved Traffic Light Dance Off. Think the Grocery Store might have benefited from dance too. Having to come up w/lyrics – tough. #DanceChat

Alyssa Schoeneman AScho3 Alyssa Schoeneman

Here’s another Improv Everywhere video with an explanation about how a flashmob is organized.  #DanceChat

This concludes tonight’s #DanceChat. I hope you learned something!
