Tonight’s #DanceChat has officially begun! The topic is digital dance: how the Internet & social media have impacted the dance world.  Let’s start by discussing YouTube. What makes a dance video a YouTube sensation? What dance videos have gone viral? #DanceChat

AScho3 just saw the dancing cockatoo in an art installation at Krannert Art museum. Remember that one?

@jtoenjes I wasn’t familiar, but I just looked it up. Is it set to “Whip Your Hair”? #DanceChat

I recently posted this video on Facebook; it features Mickey Mouse in a dance battle & is worth watching #DanceChat

“Aunt Carol Usher” is also a great YouTube dance-themed find. It features an old woman doing Usher’s dance moves

So in general, dances become YouTube sensations because of novelty – either in the dance technique, the dancer or the situation. People love to see “normal people” dancing – in other words, people who don’t necessarily have the best dance technique, but they also love to see people who have impeccable dance technique. It inspires the “Wow” factor that most people get from watching live performances. So how does watching a dance clip on YouTube differ from watching something in person? #DanceChat

For dancers, the small screen can be daunting. There is no way to guarantee that you connect with your audience, if that’s desired #DanceChat

The Internet allows dance to reach a much wider audience.Have you ever been inspired to see a show based on an online clip? #DanceChat

@AScho3 I have very little joy in watching dance videos on youtube. But I love watching my friends clown around the dance floor. #dancechat

@DudeMcnude What makes an enjoyable dance “performance” for you? Is an informal setting a key factor? #DanceChat

AScho3 I certainly wouldn’t go and watch at a dance studio if that’s what you’re asking.
Alyssa Schoeneman

@DudeMcnude For the record, most dance recitals are held in a theater, not a studio. Regardless, why not? Too stuffy? #DanceChat

@DudeMcnude You’re a big sports fan. What makes sporting events more appealing then a dance concert? Dancers get physical, too. #DanceChat

@AScho3 Because I’m not interested in technicals. I am interested in joining in on silliness.

@DudeMcnude Fair enough. I found some tackle-heavy choreography for you in case you want to turn your back on football.

AScho3 It’s all about the Haka War Dance. #DanceChat

DudeMcnude I love that! It’s great to see a sporting event feature a dance that doesn’t require short shorts to be entertaining. #DanceChat

AScho3 haka war dance came up in my dance class discussion. Very engaging dance for the purpose of bonding and intimidating the other team.

Like film, dance productions benefit from the ability to create a trailer. If the experience happens over time, it is fitting that the advertising should as well. I LOVED watching the trailer for Cirque du Soleil’s “Immortal” #DanceChat cirquedusoleil.com/en/shows/micha…

The web has also made a lot of historically relevant dance more accessible. Physical dance libraries are few and far between #DanceChat

Jacob’s Pillow Dance Interactive is my new favorite site. danceinteractive.jacobspillow.org. It chronicles outstanding performances from the festival’s 80 year history and provides historical info. about each performer. #DanceChat

How else has the web changed the dance world? For one, it allows real-time discussion of dance as it happens. Dance companies like Misnomer Dance Theater live-stream their performances and allow online viewers to discuss it in real-time. Read more about Misnomer Dance Theater online here:misnomer.org/about.htm #DanceChat

The web also gives dance artists opportunities to connect and network across states and nations. My blog has given me the chance to continue relevant discussions about dance outside of an academic community. #DanceChat

Let’s shy away from dance a bit. How does what we’ve discussed tonight parallel innovation in other fields? #DanceChat

@jtoenjes Tell me about some Internet sensations in the music biz. You know, outside of Justin Bieber. #DanceChat

How do the YouTube music sensations differ from the dance ones? My guess is that the musicians get better follow-up #DanceChat
Alyssa Schoeneman

Has anyone ever watched a YouTube video and tried to contact the dancer? My hope is yes, but the reality is probably no. #DanceChat

I think people are more apt to think that dance talent is interchangeable, while musical talent & personal brand are more unique. Because of that, agents may think that it is more worth the time to single out a YouTube performer who can sing & sell it than to single out a dancer. Thoughts? #DanceChat

That concludes tonight’s #DanceChat. Thanks so much to@jtoenjes and @DudeMcnude for your thoughts!
